The streets of Victorian England come to life as Oliver, a malnourished orphan in a workhouse, becomes the neglected apprentice of an undertaker. Oliver escapes to London and finds acceptance among a group of petty thieves and pickpockets led by the elderly Fagin. When Oliver is captured for a theft he did not commit, the benevolent victim, Mr. Brownlow takes him in. Fearing the safety of his hideout, Fagin employs the sinister Bill Sikes and the sympathetic Nancy to kidnap him back, threatening Oliver’s chances of discovering the true love of a family.

The Adventures of Tom Sawyer is the irresistible story of a fourteen year old boy growing up in the heartland of America, based on the classic novel. Set in 1840 Missouri, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer is the tale of young Tom Sawyer and the never ending mischief of which he so often finds himself a part; whether it’s matching wits with Aunt Polly, tricking his friends into whitewashing a fence for him or narrowly escaping the clutches of a murderous villain. Along with best friend, Huckleberry Finn, and love interest, Becky Thatcher, the greatest Tom Sawyer exploits are plucked from the book and plopped onto the stage.

About NOR Junior Theatre

The North of the River Junior Theatre Program has been a part of the North of the River Recreation and Park District since its inception in 1968 when Don Harrelson approached the District about starting a theatre group for youth in the community. Auditions for the first production, Toby Tyler, were held in January of 1969 with Don Harrelson directing. NOR JT offers the youth in our community a positive and safe environment where they can learn how to communicate their thoughts and ideas, and where they are accepted for who they are and are free to express themselves. NOR JT encourages creativity, builds social interaction skills, and gives youth confidence to explore and learn about themselves, various cultures, history, and their community. NOR JT also teaches them the importance of responsibility and commitment by working together as a community with a common goal through involvement with set design, props, costumes design, student directing, choreography, sound, lights, working backstage, and more. More importantly, NOR JT fosters a FUN environment in which our youth can use their imaginations.

NOR JT is a parent participation program and parents are highly encouraged to be involved.  **PARENTS: All NOR volunteers must pass a fingerprint clearance through the Dept. of Justice PRIOR to the start of the program.  In order to avoid any delays in service, please schedule an appointment with the Personnel Office as soon as possible.  Download the packet below.
